Hi everyone,

Well just few days over our two year mark we are sad to say good bye to our belowed blogspot blog and say hello to a brand new Weblog that is directly attached to Kostelphoto.com which has also underwent some cosmetic surgery. We have worked very hard to make it pretty, functional and consistent with Kostelphoto.com brand. We are thrilled to present you:

The great news is that we were able to transfer all the old posts and link them to our new blog. There might be few broken links in between, but we will have that ironed shortly.

Thanks again to all our peeps, followers, readers or stumblers for your continuous support and undying blog love!
Cheers,
Anna-Maria and Mark

North South Nautical Group

Many of you know that sailing is dear to my heart. Although not a pro, I love the sport and our little 23 foot Columbia Tango (which is still for sale) ;(
So when Mike approached me to do a shoot for his company NorthSouthYachtSales.com I was all over it. You see, they deal with preowned vessels not smaller than 30 feet. I think you know what I am talking about. Mike has incredible credentials as a sailor as do all his brokers. So if you are looking for that mint used 30+ foot Yacht, give Mike a call.

Future around the corner

Hi everyone,

This post is not really photo related, but I wanted to share this really interesting video that I saw on TED. Always intelectually challenging and most fascinating speakers appear to speak about a miriad of subjects and topics. I have blogged about Ted before, and probably will continuously post interesting topics. Here is one from the tech sector by Patti Maes. Integration of devices, amalgamation and retrieval of information analogous to the sixth sense as heard below. Enjoy, and embrace technology. Its good for everyone, not just Geeks ;)

Negative Space in Photography

Hi guys,

Few of our amateur photog friends had concerns about composition and the right proportions in photographs. Well there are a few written rules and few that you need to break.

Without getting too deep into the subject one should be aware of the rule of thirds. Read the article that deals with the subject in simple analogies.
When looking at an image you will be able to differentiate the "negative space" vs "positive space". Generally the negative space refers to the space around you subject and positive space is your subject. These spaces are always intertwined and need to compliment each other. Compose your images with a focus in mind. See what you are trying to say with the picture and what your audience should focus on. Sometimes having a simple image with less distraction is much more effective than cramming an image full of focal points that can't convey the message. Find a focus in your image where you want the eye to wander, and allow the negative space to aid.

Below are two images of Niki to demonstrate that negative space can be very helpful in bringing ones attention to the subject no matter how small it is or wether it follows the rule of thirds. Hope that helps a little, and I strongly encourage you to practise, practise, practise. So before you take your point and shoot or dslrs out, give it a thought of what it is that you are trying to say by the image, compose your shot, look for a focal point, and snap away.

Fire & Ice Engagement Session

We love themed engagement Shoots. Speaking with Matt and Karen, it wasn't long before we figured out exactly what they were looking for. Matus, an avid hockey player and Karen's form in figure skating merged the perfect place to start. On ICE of course. It was really cold but both Karen and Matt were great sports, and kept warm cuddling and posing for us. Of course we would have to balance the ying with a yang and off we were to a local firehall that Matt has prearanged for us. How exciting. Not only did we end up shooting, we also witnessed a real life fire alarm where the boys suited up and off they went. This blog post was to be a sneak peek, but I admit, we have problems choosing 2-3 of our best, so here is more like 16-18 and more to come. Cheers you two, we are thrilled to be part of your special day!

Port Credit-Cold and Beautiful

Beautiful Port Credit at brink of Spring? Hmm, not sure but It was just an incredible sunny day, melting icicles and frozen lake water washed up on the breakwater rocks. I didn't want to miss it, since I had no chance to document the shore line this winter. Even Niki was extatic about the Vitamin D she was getting.
